The impressive Kleftis Gorge is situated in Orliakas, near the village of Spelaio Grevenon. Orliakas is a low mountain in the southwest of Grevena prefecture. An area of natural beauty surrounded by rushing rivers, verdant slopes and large streams. On this mountain, Velonias river carved over time the beautiful Gorge of Liatissa or as is otherwise known the Gorge of Kleftis (in Greek bandit / thief). According to legend, during the Turkish domination a bandit was pursued by the Turks. Reaching the gorge he jumped over the river to the other side, making a promise to himself to build a bridge if he survived. True to his word, he built the beautiful single-arched bridge which still stands there to remind us of the story.
Our journey begins near the stone Katsogiannis Bridge, the entrance to the gorge, and concludes just before the stone Bridge of Liatissa. Spanning approximately 1,000 meters in length and with a width not exceeding 3-4 meters, the gorge features imposing vertical cliffs reaching heights of 150 meters. At many points, it is so narrow that sunlight barely reaches the bottom.
Despite its narrowness, crossing the gorge presents no technical difficulties and does not require the use of ropes. Along the route, there are two technical sections where participants can experience free descents (jumps) of 2m and 3m. All participants are equipped with helmets, life jackets, and neoprene suits (when required) during the crossing.
