The Vouraikos Gorge is one of the most impressive natural landscapes in Greece. Hiking along the route of the historic Odontotos Rack Railway offers an amazing experience through lush vegetation, running waters and towering rock formations. It is a journey that beautifully combines natural beauty with history and tradition.
In the northern Peloponnese, between Mount Helmos and the eastern slopes of Panachaiko, stretches this stunning twenty–kilometre gorge, shaped over the centuries by the Vouraikos River. Part of the Helmos–Vouraikos National Park and the UNESCO Global Geopark, it stands out for its rich biodiversity and unique geological features. Waterfalls, caves, and dramatic rock formations create a landscape of exceptional natural beauty.
The trail we follow crosses this protected area and forms part of the long–distance European path E4. During the five–hour hike, we walk parallel to the tracks of the Odontotos Railway, a living monument built in 1896 to connect Diakopto with Kalavryta and often described as the most spectacular railway route in the Balkans.
Starting from the Mega Spilaio station, we enjoy every step of the trail until we reach Niamata station, where we board the historic train for our return. This route combines adventure, nature, and culture, offering a complete experience for those who love the authentic Greek countryside.
