The Vikos Gorge is part of the 12,600 hectare Vikos-Aoos National Park and has been listed in the Guinness book of records as the deepest canyon worldwide in proportion to its width. It is definitely a spectacular sight! It is accessible from several points, including the gravity-defying cliff-face monastery of Agia Paraskevi at its southern end and the ridge-top village of Vikos at the other. The landscape of the 20 km long gorge is extremely diverse and is characterized by abrupt changes in altitude. The Vikos Gorge has been carved over millions of years by the Voidomatis River, a tributary of the Aoös River. As it splits the mountain in half, its slopes expose rock formations of limestone and dolomite, dating back to 150 million years . Its vertical cliffs rise up to a height of 1700 meters.

However, if you are unsure or prefer the added security and knowledge a guide can provide, hiring one can be a worthwhile investment.
Essential equipment includes sturdy, comfortable, and broken-in hiking boots with good ankle support and traction, weather-appropriate clothing, a backpack with your essentials like water, snacks, medication etc.
The crossing can take approximately 7-8 hours, depending on the hiker's pace, physical condition and weather conditions.
Beginners and less experienced hikers with a good fitness level can undertake the Vikos Gorge crossing with proper preparation, caution, and the right mindset.
While a fear of heights can make hiking the Vikos Gorge more challenging due to some steep paths, it doesn't necessarily exclude you from participating. Your guide will be by your side and make the experience much easier.
Whether you can hike the Vikos gorge after knee surgery depends on various factors, including the type of surgery, your current physical condition, and your doctor's recommendations. It's crucial to consult with your orthopedic surgeon or healthcare provider before attempting any strenuous physical activities like hiking.
Hiking the Vikos Gorge during winter months (November to April) presents significant challenges and potential risks due to potentially icy and slippery terrain. Some months it is not allowed due to the high level of the river. Best way is to consult us about the condition of the gorge.
