In today's Meet The Locals, we journey to one of Greece's most idyllic landscapes, the enchanting Lake Plastira. And who better to guide us than Romanos Samouris, a man who knows every corner of the region? As the head of Trekking Hellas West Thessaly, Romanos is the perfect person to reveal the lake's hidden secrets, tell us about the adventurous activities it offers, and share his enthusiasm for the beauty of nature!
Q: Romanos, I've never visited Lake Plastira. What experience would you recommend to get a feel for the pulse of this place?
A: I'd start you off with canoe kayaking, or a hydrobike on the lake to enjoy the tranquility of the landscape and the calm waters reflecting the surrounding mountains. Then, I'd lead you to the local villages to explore their alleyways and enjoy a coffee at a traditional cafe.
Q: What's your strongest memory connected to Lake Plastira?
A: I vividly remember bike rides around the lake and picnics with my family on its shores. But also, the first time I biked on the trails around the lake was an unforgettable experience. The views, the scents of the forest, and the feeling of freedom it gave me are something I'll never forget.
Q: What's your favorite activity at the lake?
A: Tough question! But if I have to choose, I'd say canoeing. It's a unique way to explore the calm waters of the lake, see nature from a different perspective, and get some exercise at the same time.
Q: If someone had the chance to experience only one adventure at Lake Plastira, what would it be?
A: I'd suggest a mountain bike excursion, exploring the mountain trails surrounding the lake, ending in a picturesque village to enjoy the local cuisine. The morphology of the Agrafa peaks, combined with the lush fir forest surrounding the lake, leaves visitors with unique images.
Q: What measures should be taken to ensure the sustainable tourism development of the area?
A: I believe that educating and raising awareness among visitors about environmental protection is key. Also, promoting activities that respect nature, such as hiking, cycling, and canoeing, is important for preserving the natural beauty of the area.
Q: What "souvenir" would you choose from your hometown to give to someone?
A: A bottle of Mavro Mesenikola wine. It's an excellent product that represents the tradition and taste of our land.
We warmly thank Romanos Samouris for his time and the valuable information he shared with us. We hope we've inspired you to explore Lake Plastira, now just 3 hours from Athens, making it an ideal destination for short getaways!
