Parnassos is one of Greece’s most breathtaking mountains and a top destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. With an impressive peak at 2,457 meters on Mount Liakoura, this historic mountain is nestled in the heart of Central Greece, spanning the regions of Boeotia, Phthiotis, and Phocis. Since 1938, Parnassos has been a protected National Park, home to some of Greece’s richest ecosystems, including fir and cedar forests and rare endemic plants like the Parnassian Peony.
According to mythology, Parnassos was named after the hero Parnassos, son of Poseidon and the nymph Cleodora. However, etymologically, the word "Parnassos" is thought to be of Pelasgian origin, meaning “the wooded mountain”—a name that perfectly captures its natural beauty and dense forests.
Parnassos is dedicated to the god Apollo 🎶, the god of music and the arts, and is famous for the Oracle of Delphi on its southwestern slopes. Its strategic location made it central to key historical moments, from the Battle of Thermopylae to the Greek War of Independence in 1821.
On Parnassos’s slopes, you’ll find picturesque traditional villages such as Arachova, a popular winter resort 🎿, and Delphi, renowned for its archaeological sites. Other charming villages like Agoriani, with its waterfalls, Amfiklia, and Polydrosos are perfect for year-round getaways with their natural beauty and authentic atmosphere.
