For over 4,000 years, the people of western Mongolia have forged an extraordinary bond with their majestic companions of the sky—the golden eagles. These remarkable birds of prey have been used for centuries to assist in the hunting of small mammals, showcasing the unique cultural heritage of the Kazakh people. At the heart of this tradition lies the magnificent Golden Eagle Festival, an awe-inspiring event that draws visitors from far and wide to witness this extraordinary spectacle.

📅 Held annually in October, with additional smaller festivals in September, the Golden Eagle Festival takes place in the Bayan-Ulgii province of Mongolia, approximately 1600 km west of the capital, Ulaanbaatar. This vibrant celebration serves as a platform to showcase the rich Kazakh culture and pass down ancient traditions to future generations.

📸 The festival captivates photographers with its enthralling display of action and intensity. Around 40 to 80 skilled hunters participate in the event, creating breathtaking images that encapsulate the spirit of this unique tradition.

🎉 The festival kicks off with a grand parade of mounted hunters, each proudly clutching a magnificent golden eagle on their right hand. Some hunters travel great distances on horseback to be part of this extraordinary gathering. The atmosphere is filled with anticipation and excitement as participants prepare to compete over two thrilling days.

🏅 Participants showcase their skills and traditions across a range of categories. These include the hunters' and eagles' clothing, the elaborate horse and hunter ornaments, mounted archery, and the agility and hunting prowess of the eagles themselves. The eagles are tested on their ability to catch stuffed decoys dragged by horses, as well as their communication with the hunters. This is demonstrated when the eagles are released from the top of a hill and must recognize their trainers and land gracefully on their arms. The festival also features camel and horse racing, as well as a thrilling tug of war using goatskin with mounted competitors. To top it off, attendees are treated to a captivating Cossack concert.

👩‍🦰 While most of the eagle trainers are men, it is remarkable to see approximately 10 women carrying on this ancient tradition. One notable participant is Ashlopan, a teenage girl who fearlessly competes alongside adult male hunters and has even won prizes at the Golden Eagle Festival.

🦅 Golden eagles, with their incredible speed, exceptional eyesight, and sharp talons, are truly awe-inspiring creatures. During the festival, their heads are covered with special hoods to keep them calm, which are removed to initiate their hunting scans. With their keen vision, they can detect even the slightest movement from great distances. These magnificent birds have a lifespan of 20 to 30 years, weigh between 3.6 and 5 kg, and boast an impressive wingspan of 1.8 to 2.5 meters. Their diet primarily consists of small animals such as foxes, rabbits, and mice.

🌿 After serving their trainers faithfully for 6 to 7 years, the trained eagles are given names and are ceremoniously released back into the wild. This act symbolizes a deep respect for nature and a recognition of the vital role these creatures play in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem.

The Golden Eagle Festival is not just a remarkable display of skill and tradition; it is a celebration of the deep connection between humans and nature. It serves as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage that has withstood the test of time and continues to thrive in the vast landscapes of western Mongolia. The festival's allure, captivating imagery, and heart-stirring moments make it a truly unforgettable experience for all who have the privilege to witness it.

So, if you find yourself drawn to the mystique of ancient traditions and the awe-inspiring beauty of the golden eagles, make sure to mark your calendar and book your trip to Mongolia today.
