💡 Did you know that...
Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, is a vibrant and unique city known for its rich history, modern culture, and stunning natural landscapes surrounding it. It is the northernmost capital in the world, located just below the Arctic Circle, which gives it long summer days and short winter nights. Reykjavik is famous for its geothermal energy, with hot springs and heated outdoor pools scattered throughout the city, including the famous Blue Lagoon near the city.

The city's architecture is a blend of modern design and traditional Icelandic houses, many of which are covered with colorful metal sheets. Reykjavik also hosts a thriving arts scene, with many galleries, theaters, and live music venues, as well as the renowned Harpa Concert Hall. Despite its small size, the city has a lively nightlife and is considered one of the most vibrant capitals in the world.

Day's journey: 137 km, 2 hours.

Whale watching, Akureyri

After breakfast, we depart for northern Iceland following the Ring Road (N1).

At the Eyjafjordur fjord in the north, a sheltered fjord that attracts many whales to feed, we will join a whale-watching cruise. The excursion lasts approximately 2½ to 3 hours, with the experienced captain following the whales and dolphins in an area with the highest concentration of whales in Europe.

We will then transfer for an overnight stay in Akureyri, the second-largest city in Iceland. The overnight stay will be at Akureyri Backpackers, a traditional wooden accommodation in the heart of the city, in rooms for 6 and 4 people with shared bathroom facilities and breakfast.

💡Did you know that...
Akureyri, located in the northern part of Iceland, is often referred to as the "Whale Watching Capital of Iceland" due to its ideal location in the heart of the Arctic Circle. Whales can be observed here year-round, with the peak season running from April to October. These excursions bring us close to these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat, making it a must-do experience for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts visiting Iceland.

Day's journey: 365 km, 4½ hours.

Dettifoss, Stludlagil, Egilsstadir

We depart for Iceland’s most beautiful lake, Lake Myvatn, a eutrophic, shallow lake located in the area of the active Krafla volcano, formed by an eruption 2,300 years ago. We will stop at various points of interest featuring pseudo-craters, rocky formations, and underground lava rifts with hot water pools. We will explore the geothermal fields of Hverir and Krafla, characterized by fumaroles, bubbling mud pools, and craters.

Next, we visit Dettifoss, the waterfall with the largest volume of water in Europe. Driving east, we will cross volcanic desert landscapes on our way to Studlagil Canyon, an impressive gorge with basalt walls. We will explore it with a two-hour hike, descending to the bottom to admire the base of the basalt columns.

In the afternoon, we arrive at the village of Egilsstadir for an overnight stay at Eiðar - Hostel & Apartments, in fully equipped apartments for 3 to 9 people with private bathrooms and breakfast.

💡 Did you know that...Lake Myvatn, located in northern Iceland, is renowned for its unique volcanic landscapes and rich biodiversity. The lake was formed by volcanic activity approximately 2,300 years ago and is surrounded by geothermal features such as hot springs and fumaroles.

Near the lake lies Dettifoss, one of Europe’s most powerful waterfalls and one of Iceland's most spectacular natural wonders. Standing 44 meters tall and 100 meters wide, Dettifoss releases over 500 cubic meters of water per second, creating a deafening roar as it plunges into the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon. Both locations offer visitors a chance to experience Iceland’s breathtaking and diverse natural beauty.

Day's journey: 291 km, 4 hours.

Litlanesfoss / Hengifoss, Vestrahorn - Hofn

We depart in the morning for a 1.5-hour hike to the Litlanesfoss and Hengifoss waterfalls, located on the western edge of Egilsstadir Lake. These waterfalls cascade down striking volcanic cliffs with vivid colors and basaltic columns. Following a trail, we will ascend to the waterfalls, offering stunning views of the cliffs and the valley below.

Next, we head toward the southern coast of Iceland, with the day’s destination being the village of Hofn. Along the way, we’ll stop at a Viking village, built as a film set, and then walk at the base of the dramatic Vestrahorn Mountain, which overlooks a vast black sand beach.

In the afternoon, we arrive at Hofn, where we will stay overnight at Arnanes Country Hotel, in rooms for 3 to 4 people with shared bathrooms and breakfast.

💡 Did you know that…
The Litlanesfoss and Hengifoss waterfalls are located in eastern Iceland and are renowned for their stunning beauty. Litlanesfoss is famous for the impressive basalt columns surrounding it, creating a unique and picturesque landscape. Hengifoss, one of Iceland's tallest waterfalls at 128 meters, is notable for the red clay layers in the surrounding cliffs, giving it a visually distinct appearance. Both waterfalls are situated in the same area, making them a must-visit destination for nature lovers.

Day’s journey: 235 km, 4 hours.

Jokulsarlon, Skaftafell, Katla Geopark

oday we will explore Jokulsarlon Lake on an amphibious boat, which allows us to get close to icebergs with seals swimming among them.

Next, we will walk along Diamond Beach, where pieces of transparent ice are washed ashore, sparkling like diamonds. Continuing west, we will head to Skaftafell National Park, where we will take a short hike to observe one of the branches of the Vatnajokull glacier up close — the largest in Europe — and then walk along the edge of Fjadrargljufur canyon and the lava fields of the geopark.

In the afternoon, we will end up at the famous Black Beach with the basalt cave Halsanefshellir and its impressive rocky cliffs above, filled with puffin nests. Overnight stay at The Barn Hostel, in dormitory-style rooms with bunk beds, shared bathroom facilities, and breakfast.

💡 Did you know that...

Vatnajokull is the largest glacier in Europe. It covers approximately 8% of Iceland and includes stunning landscapes such as glaciers, volcanoes, and glacial lakes.

Jökulsárlón is a breathtaking glacial lagoon in southeastern Iceland, formed by the melting of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, which is part of Vatnajokull. The lagoon is filled with floating icebergs, some of which are over 1,000 years old. These icebergs break off from the glacier and drift toward the sea, eventually washing up on nearby Diamond Beach, creating a striking contrast with the black sand. Jökulsárlón is also home to wildlife such as seals and has been featured in films like James Bond: Die Another Day and Tomb Raider. It is Iceland’s deepest lake, with a depth of over 248 meters, and it has expanded due to climate change.

Daily route: 291 km, 4 hours.

Strokur geiser, Thingvellir, Reykjavik

We start our day with a visit to the rocky cliffs of Dyrholaey, where puffins nest, offering us the chance to see them up close.

Heading west, we will visit the impressive waterfalls Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss, some of which we can walk behind for a unique perspective. Continuing our journey, we will explore the famous Strokkur geyser and the Thingvellir National Park, a site of historical and geological significance.

In the afternoon, we arrive in Reykjavik, where we will settle into our accommodations before taking a walking tour of the city’s landmarks, including Hallgrimskirkja, Hofdi House, the Sun Voyager sculpture, and more.

Overnight stay at The KEX Hostel, in dormitory-style rooms with bunk beds, shared bathroom facilities, and breakfast.

💡 Did you know that...

Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, has a rich historical heritage dating back over a thousand years. It was founded in 874 AD by Norwegian settlers, making it Iceland’s oldest capital. The name Reykjavik, meaning "smoky bay," comes from the steam rising from the area's hot springs, which impressed the first settlers.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, Reykjavik began to develop as a center of trade and culture, with the establishment of schools, churches, and early infrastructure. It was also the cradle of Iceland’s modern political movement, as the first session of the Alþingi (parliament) was held in 930 AD in the Þingvellir area, a symbol of Iceland’s democratic heritage.

In the 20th century, Reykjavik transformed into a modern metropolis, becoming the cultural, economic, and political heart of Iceland while still preserving its deep historical roots.

Daily route: 290 km, 4 hours 10 minutes.
