Overview

Iceland is an otherworldly island on the edge of the Arctic Circle, a dream destination for any restless traveler.

It ranks first in the Global Peace Index, has no army, all its electricity comes from renewable energy sources, and in 2016 it was ranked the 9th most developed country in the world according to the United Nations Human Development Index.

It is identified with the island of Thule discovered by Pytheas in the 4th century BC. Its inhabitants are descendants of the Vikings and their culture was shaped by the Scandinavian heritage they brought with them. It is an island with a large number of amazing sights of all kinds, such as volcanic fields full of lava flows, craters, fumaroles, hot springs, bubbling pools, mud lakes, basalt rock formations, waterfalls (about ten thousand), steep coasts, but also glaciers, ice caves, national parks and geoparks, picturesque fishing villages, gorges, lakes with icebergs, hot springs, beaches, rocky shores, and so much more.

We are planning a series of programs, each with its own character and adapted to each season (one season we will go to see whales or puffins, another season for hiking in the highlands, another for the northern lights, and another to enter an ice cave), programs of varying lengths to suit everyone's available time, different levels of difficulty and a variety of activities from very gentle to quite demanding, programs for families, mountaineers or adventure lovers, and much more.

This particular program combines visits to some of Iceland's most important landscapes and attractions with wildlife viewing, including seals, whales, and puffins, hot springs, craters, and viewing of the total solar eclipse. All this is combined with short or longer hikes that take us to the hidden corners of each place, far from the crowds of the classic routes. A program aimed at people who love company, nature, action, and exploration and want to form a comprehensive view of Iceland in relation to the duration of the trip.

Activities / Schedule

Flight Athens – Iceland – Hella

Accommodation in organized camping in double tents.

Day trip (1h20'-94km)

South Iceland Waterfalls - Black Sand Beach - Fjaðrárgljúfur

We start our day driving east, where we will visit a series of impressive waterfalls, such as Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, and others, some of which we will pass behind.

Next up are the rocky shores of Dyrhólaey, where we'll walk along a short, easy trail and, if we're lucky, we'll be able to spot puffins nesting and breeding here. Next, we visit the famous Black Beach with the basalt cave Halsanefshellir and then depart for the Katla Geopark, where we will walk along the edge of the Fjaðrárgljúfur gorge and the lava fields of the geopark.

Finally, we depart for Kirkjubæjarklaustur.

Day's route 205 km, 3 hours.

Skaftafell - Fjallsárlón - Jökulsárlón - Diamond Beach

Continuing east, we will go to Skaftafell National Park, where we will walk to Svartifoss waterfall and from there, we will follow a 2-hour circular route to reach the panoramic viewpoint, one of the ends of Europe's largest glacier, Vatnajokull.

Next, we will visit the glacial lake Fjallsárlón, with its floating icebergs, which we will explore with a Zodiac inflatable boat and have the opportunity to get up close to both the icebergs and the end of the glacier.

Next on the program is another lake that began to form around 1935. We are talking about Jökulsárlón. Until then, the Vatnajokull glacier reached the sea, but today, with climate change, it has shrunk significantly, leaving behind an impressive lake filled with floating icebergs and seals hunting. We will walk along the lake and end up at Diamond Beach, a beach at the outlet of Lake Jökulsárlón, where pieces of transparent ice wash up and sparkle like diamonds.

Finally, we depart for Höfn.

Day's route 230 km, 3 hours 15 minutes.

Vestrahorn Mountain - Litlanesfoss - Hengifoss

We start in the morning for the imposing Vestrahorn Mountain, where we will walk along the large shallow beach in front of the mountain, enjoying views of the mountain and the sea.

Then, we'll head to the Litlanesfoss and Hengfifoss waterfalls, which are surrounded by impressive basalt walls. Here, we will take a 2-hour hike to observe them, reaching the highest waterfall and enjoying a breathtaking view of the waterfall and the valley with the lake.

Finally, we arrive at Eggilstadir.

Stuðlagil - Dettifoss - Hverir - Viti Crater - Myvatn Lake

Today we will explore Stuðlagil Gorge, an impressive gorge with basalt walls, where we will hike for two hours, reaching the bottom and the base of its basalt walls.

We continue northwest and cross desert-like volcanic fields to visit Dettifoss waterfall, which has the largest volume of water in Europe. Next are the geothermal fields of Hverir and Krafla, where we will see fumaroles, holes with bubbling mud, and craters.

We end up at Lake Myvatn, a shallow eutrophic lake in the area of the active Krafla volcano, which was created by an eruption 2,300 years ago, which we will explore with stops and walks in pseudo-craters, rock formations, underground lava fissures, and hot water pools.

Day's route 285 km, 4 ½ hours.

Whale Watching - Borgarnes

We depart in the morning for Árskógssandur, where we will enjoy a three-hour whale watching program in an area with the highest concentration of whales in Europe, with a sighting probability of nearly 100%.

Afterwards, we visit Akureyri, the "capital of the north" as it is called, for a stroll through one of Iceland's most beautiful cities.

In the afternoon, we arrive in Borgarnes.

Accommodation in organized camping in tents.

Day's route: 500 km, 6 hours.

Snæfellsnes Peninsula

Breakfast and departure to explore the Snæfellsnes peninsula. At our first stop, we will walk along a coastline dotted with rocks and seals lazing on them. We will approach them as close as possible to admire them up close.

Continuing on, we will stop at the rocky shores of Arnarstapi for a walk along the coastline with its beautiful formations of polygonal basalt walls. At our next stop, on the Londarangar coast, we will walk on volcanic rocks to the Malarrif lighthouse.

Finally, we will look for the ideal spot to watch the Total Solar Eclipse, which will take place right where we are.

Next is the Strokkur geyser, where we will observe the eruptions of the hot water jet and walk around the area. Then, we will visit the
impressive Gullfoss waterfall.

Finally, we depart for Reykjavik.

Accommodation in an organized campsite near the city.

Day's route: 275 km, 4 hours.
