Meet The Locals: The Unmissable Arcadian Festival

    • Meet the locals

Just before you officially bid farewell to summer, on the first Saturday of every September, Panagia (formerly Zerzova) in Gortynia transforms into a vast dance floor, reminiscent of a scene from a movie. With the sounds of the clarinet, lute, and violin enticing you, you'll dance until dawn alongside the locals, enjoying one of the most beautiful and traditional Greek festivals.

In this village of just 10 permanent residents, in a beautiful square, the local association has managed, through excellent organization, to gather hundreds of locals and visitors from the surrounding villages and Athens every year, with the participation of many young people.

"I always remember the Zerzova festival as a big hug. All together, we dance, laugh, sing... it's the moment I feel closest to my roots," says Katerina from Trekking Hellas Arcadia. While Dimitra K. from Trekking Hellas HQ tells us about the food: "The 'vrasto' at the end of the festival is always a welcome treat after the celebration and wine. It's like a sweet full stop that marks the end of summer."

A village straight out of a fairytale:

Panagia is a village full of surprises, hidden like a treasure in the embrace of Mainalo. Built on the lush green forested hill of Prophet Elias, with panoramic views of the Alfeios plain, Panagia enchants visitors with its traditional architecture and tranquility. Formerly, it was called "Zerzova" after its first permanent Slavic inhabitants, but in 1927 it officially took its new name.

This Greek mountain village will charm you with its cobblestone streets, stone houses, and the picturesque square with its arched fountain. Don't expect luxuries and crowds of tourists. Although it doesn't have the same fame as other villages in the area, such as Dimitsana, its beauty and authenticity are unparalleled. Here, you will find peace and a unique opportunity to experience the real Greece!
